All current ELLs, as well as former ELLs for up to two years after exiting ELL status, are eligible for ELL testing accommodations in addition to any accommodations specified in their IEPs or 504 Plans, if applicable. Schools should assess and determine the necessary accommodations for each ELL at the start of the school year to help maximize their success on all exams. These accommodations apply to most assessments, including teacher-created tests and State-mandated exams. However, ELLs are not eligible for ELL testing accommodations on the NYSESLAT, unless they have an IEP.
The document below offers comprehensive guidance on testing accommodations for English Language Learners (ELLs) in New York State, along with recommendations for implementation and any applicable limitations.
