Statement from NYC Charter School Center CEO James Merriman on Today’s State Test Score Results
NEW YORK – Please attribute the following statement to James Merriman, CEO of the New York City Charter School Center, on today’s state test score results:
“New York City charter schools, which are 92% African American and Latino, continue to far outpace district schools serving similar populations of students. In math, African-American students in charters are more than twice as likely to be proficient than their counterparts in traditional district schools. While proficiency rates are still not as high as they need to be in charter or district schools, this is definitive proof that charter schools serve a critical role in meeting the needs of traditionally underserved populations and it shows why they are in such high demand from families in long underserved communities.”
