(NEW YORK) – – The New York City Charter School Center today released the following statement in response to New York State’s budget that provides funding for public charter schools but maintains an arbitrary charter cap:

“While, this budget provides much needed funding for existing charter schools, it continues to maintain a charter cap that arbitrarily closes the door on New York City families asking for a choice in high quality public education,” said James Merriman, CEO of the New York City Charter School Center. “We should be opening doors and giving all of our kids a chance to succeed and recover from the pandemic equitably. Raising the cap is a progressive goal. It is an urgent goal. We will keep advocating for it until it gets done.”
