NY STATE LEGISLATURE’S ONE-HOUSE BUDGET PROPOSALS MISS OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT NYC FAMILIES FIGHTING FOR GOOD SCHOOL OPTIONS

NEW YORK, NY — In response to the One-House budget proposals released in the New York state legislature today, which excluded proposals aimed at expanding access to a high quality education for New York City families, James Merriman, CEO of the NYC Charter School Center released the following statement:

From Albany to NYC, thousands of New Yorkers have advocated for months to allow more public charter schools to open in NYC – but today, lawmakers in Albany missed another opportunity to support them,” said James Merriman, CEO of the New York City Charter School Center. “Thankfully, the session’s not over, and common sense can still win. Between the Governor’s proposal and the READ Act – both of which would result in opening public charter schools led by people from the communities they seek to serve – lawmakers can and should advance an education agenda centered around equity and expanding access to good schools.  We strongly urge them to listen to the voices of NYC families who want nothing more than an opportunity for their kids, and work with Governor Hochul to lift the regional cap and revive zombie charters.”
