NEW YORK CITY CHARTER SCHOOL CENTER STATEMENT ON SUNY APPROVAL OF TEN NEW PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOLS
(NEW YORK, NY) – James Merriman, Chief Executive Officer of the New York City Charter School Center, released the following statement in response to the State University of New York (SUNY) voting to approve ten new public charter schools Wednesday:
“Today, SUNY approved 14 new public charter schools that will be led by a talented and diverse group of leaders. They will join the 282 charters that are already serving New York City’s families. We should remember that these schools can open because Governor Hochul and charter supporters in the New York State Legislature fought hard to expand educational opportunities in New York City. Four charter schools sit on the waitlist and can’t open until the State creates additional charter slots, which we encourage it to do promptly. An artificial cap on great schools makes no sense.”
The operators approved today to open new schools include Lamad Academy, Next Generation Charter School, South Bronx Classical Charter School, Urban Dove Team Charter School, Success Academy Charter Schools, and Zeta Charter Schools.
