NEW YORK CITY CHARTER SCHOOL CENTER APPLAUDS SUPREME COURT DECISION BLOCKING CREATION OF RELIGIOUS CHARTERS
(NEW YORK) – The U.S. Supreme Court deadlocked 4-4 today in the case of St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School v. Drummond – a critical ruling that effectively blocks the creation of religious public charter schools. James Merriman, CEO of the New York City Charter School Center today issued the following statement in response:
“The ruling is not surprising because charter schools are an indispensable and central part of the public education system — in New York State and in every state in which they exist. They are not private and they cannot provide a religious education. This has been a vast diversion of resources away from the main fight, which is to improve outcomes for too many students who still don’t have access to high-quality public schools.”
