NEW ENROLLMENT DATA SHOWS STRONG GROWTH FOR NYC CHARTER SCHOOLS IN 2023-2024
NYC Charters Grew by 4.1% & Now Enroll Over 146,000 Students — Representing Over 15% of K-12 Public School Students in NYC
(NEW YORK) – The recently released 2023-24 New York State Education Department (NYSED) enrollment data shows that New York City charter school enrollment grew 4.1% over the past school year, with charters now enrolling over 146,000 students and representing over 15% of all public school students attending K-12 schools across the five boroughs. Charter school kindergarten enrollment grew by 5.4% between the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years, further highlighting that charter schools are gaining steam among families entering the education system.
“New York City families — new and returning — are choosing charter schools for their children because they see the results. For 25 years, charters have helped prepare a generation of New York City students for success in and out of the classroom,” said James Merriman, CEO of the New York City Charter Center. “Charter schools’ enrollment gains are a testament to the incredible teachers, staff, and school leaders who work every day to close proficiency gaps and partner with families to find the best, unique educational path for their children. Families know they can trust New York City charter schools to help their kids succeed.”
2023-24 NYSED enrollment highlights include:
- Charter school enrollment growth outpaced the district’s from school year 2022-23 to 2023-24 (4.1% vs 0.7%, respectively).
- Charter schools now enroll over 146,000 students – and represent over 15% of all K-12 public school students in NYC.
- Charter school kindergarten student enrollment increased 5.4% between school years 2022-23 and 2023-24 (the district had a 2.3% gain during that period).
- NYC charter school enrollment of Hispanic students increased 7.0% between SY 2022-23 and 2023-24 (in the district Hispanic student enrollment increased by 2.7% during that period).
- More than one out of every three Black kindergarten students, or 36.8%, attends a New York City charter school.
- English language learners now make up 10.1% of all charter school students.
- Students with disabilities now make up nearly 19% of the students in charter schools, comparable to the district’s average.
