With all the insiders’ debate over the merits of charter schools, we often forget to ask what ordinary New Yorkers think.† A recent poll of NYC residents by the Marist Institute for Public Opinion and the New York Daily News provides some evidence: two out of three New Yorkers say they consider charter schools a “good thing” because of the public school choice they provide for parents and kids.
Results also show that support for NYC charter schools is in fact citywide and not limited to any particular subgroup of people. Regardless of race, education level, gender, age, income, borough, or party registration, at least 60% of NYC residents support charter schools.
