It’s not every day that you have an opportunity to make a big difference with very little effort expended. This is one of those days. East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP), a gem in the Harlem educational community, is part of Chase’s annual million dollar grant contest on Facebook. Voting ends tomorrow, October 5, at 12:OO PM EST so vote today!
Why We Support EHTP
Because charter schools must generally enroll children throughout the district by lottery, it is hard for them to be connected to a neighborhood in the same way an elementary school with zoned enrollment often is, even after years of operating in a neighborhood. Added to that, the better the school is, the more applicants it attracts from across a district.
It’s why we are heartened to see an increasing number of community-based organizations starting charter schools. EHTP has been providing after-school tutoring to children for more than 50 years. This fall it opened up a charter school in East Harlem to expand on its work. Not surprisingly given its roots, it has the support of the community.
That’s why we are whole-heartedly supporting EHTP’s quest to win a million dollar grant from Chase. We’ve voted EHTP–hope you do as well.
