Charter schools are free public schools open to all children. NYC charter schools have diverse student populations and offer many opportunities for specialized educators in music, arts, science, and languages. Many charters have dedicated MLL, ELL and Special Education teachers.

Because charters are independent from the district school system, they have greater flexibility in the way they operate. Charter schools are free to develop their own academic programs, choose staff, set educational goals, adapt their academic year and school days according to student needs, and establish their own standards of conduct.

The combination of freedom and accountability for success allows charter schools to respond to community needs, try new approaches, and put students’ learning first.
