STATEMENT FROM NYC CHARTER SCHOOL CENTER CEO JAMES MERRIMAN ON UFT’S BAD MATH, REFUSAL TO LET GOOD SCHOOLS FLOURISH
NEW YORK – Please attribute the following statement to James Merriman, CEO of the New York City Charter School Center, on the United Federation of Teacher’s (UFT) faulty numbers at today’s press conference in which union boss Mike Mulgrew once again stood in the way of allowing there to be more and better public schools by refusing to support elimination of the charter school cap.
“You would think a teachers’ union could get something simple like how school enrollment works but you would be wrong. The new seats that the UFT points to won’t be filled with new students but returning students moving to a newly created grade as their schools grow grade-by-grade.
“While I understand the UFT would like parents to be restricted to district schools that their members teach in, the only solution to helping the tens of thousands of students on charter school wait lists every year is to start new charter schools, and that means eliminating the cap on public charter schools once and for all.”
