NYC SPECIAL EDUCATION COLLABORATIVE VICE PRESIDENT DIXON DEUTSCH STATEMENT ON TODAY’S UFT RELEASE
(New York, NY) – Please attribute the following statement to Dixon Deutsch, Vice President of NYC Special Education Collaborative:
“The UFT’s math is off. In 2014-15, district enrollment of students with special needs was 19% and charters were at 16.9%. The gap in enrollment of students with special needs is nearly closed. In fact, the NYC Special Education Collaborative is currently working with over 180 charter schools to develop new programming and even new school models that address more intensive needs of all students,” said Dixon Deutsch, Vice President, NYC Special Education Collaborative.
Dixon continued: “Michael Mulgrew is behind the times. Many charter schools enroll students that have self-contained program recommendations and ensure that these students are supported in an inclusive program that fosters greater academic potential. This is in line with the DOE’s own special education reforms to do the same. Self-contained settings are not producing the outcomes needed – the district’s own graduation rate for students that have self-contained settings was last reported to be only 5%. I should hope that’s not the standard anyone wants or should be expected to meet.”
