NYC CHARTERS CRITICALLY CLOSE TO CAP LIMIT AS STATE APPROVES SIX NEW PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOLS
Only Eight Charters Left to be Issued in NYC
(NEW YORK) – New York State’s Board of Regents voted today to approve six new public charter schools for New York City, leaving only eight charters left to be issued in the city. The New York City Charter School Center released the following statement:
“The most recent round of charter school approvals is yet another gain for New York City’s diverse education landscape. However, we are running out of charters at a time when charter schools are making remarkable progress in closing the achievement gap for some of the most vulnerable children in New York City,” said James Merriman, Chief Executive Officer, New York City Charter School Center. Now more than ever, we need our policymakers in Albany to forgo special interests and ensure all families have the opportunity to access high quality public schools – something that sadly is not currently a reality.”
The Board of Regents approved the following six charter schools to open in New York City:
- NYC Charter High School for Computer Engineering and Innovation (Bronx)
- Bronx Arts and Science Charter School (Bronx)
- Brooklyn RISE Charter School (Brooklyn)
- Education Unlimited Lyceum Charter School (Manhattan)
- LEEP Dual-Language Academy Charter School (Brooklyn)
- Staten Island Hebrew Public Charter School (Staten Island)
Background on the Charter Cap:
- New York City’s sub-cap has been expended. Fourteen of the 22 reserve charters, that were available per 2015 legislation, were issued in the latest authorization rounds of SUNY and NYSED.
