Charters Continue To Outpace District Growth on State Scores
(NEW YORK) – James Merriman, CEO of the New York City Charter Center, today released the following statement on New York State’s math and ELA test scores:
“Today, it’s more clear than ever why so many New York City families have chosen to send their children to charter schools. The City’s charter schools continue to deliver extraordinary results for disadvantaged students and have eliminated the achievement gap that otherwise persists across the city and the state. Progress is taking place across the board—for African American, Latino and low income students, as well English language learners and students with special needs. This was the goal when charters first opened 20 years ago and remains the goal today.”
The new data show that, despite changes in the state tests that have led to across-the-board improvements, charter schools continue to outpace district schools on growth:
- NYC charter gains are more than the overall district gains
- African American charter students’ proficiency rates compared to African American students in NYC district.
- This is the first year that Latino charter students in NYC outperformed white students statewide.
With more than 52,700 students without access to seats in New York City alone, and with the number of available new charters running dangerously low, the Charter Center and other advocates are pushing New York State to pass new legislation that will remove the current arbitrary restrictions on creating more charter schools in New York City.
