NYC CHARTER SCHOOL CENTER LAUNCHES THE COMMON ONLINE APPLICATION FOR 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR

Through One Application, Families Can Apply to 228 Different NYC Charter School Sites

Advocates Call for a City-Wide Common Enrollment Model to Streamline the Application Process for Families

(NEW YORK) – The New York City Charter School Center announced today that it has opened the Common Online Charter School Application for the 2020-2021 school year, allowing families across the five boroughs to apply, through a single application, to 228 different charter school sites in New York City. Through the Common Online Charter School Application and the Charter Center’s school finder, families have easy access to the information they need – grades, location, proficiency scores, demographics, etc. The streamlined, easy-to-use application helps ensure families can apply to the public charter schools that best fit their child. The NYC Charter School Center will also be hosting an online calendar with dates for charter school open houses in all five boroughs, giving families information about multiple public charter schools on a single site.

“The Common Online Charter School Application gives NYC families easy access to apply to a wide range of public charter schools in our city through a simple online portal – allowing them to focus less on paperwork and complicated admissions processes, and more on finding the right school for their child,” said James Merriman, CEO of the New York City Charter Center. “Families should not have to be education experts to navigate public school enrollment! While the Common Online Charter School Application helps, a transparent citywide common enrollment system – one that includes district and charter schools – would be the ultimate equitable system, eliminating enrollment barriers NYC families face every fall season.”

The Common Online Application is offered in 10 different languages including English, Spanish, French, Arabic, Haitian Creole, Chinese, Urdu, Bengali, Korean and Russian, and does not affect enrollment into district schools. Families can apply any time between today and when the application closes at 12:00 midnight on Wednesday, April 24, 2020.

Families can find information about their neighborhood schools here. For more information on New York City’s public charter schools, visit www.chartercenter.org.
