MONDAY 11/2: New York City Councilmembers, PTA Leadership, District & Charter School Leaders Unite to Confront Segregation Crisis in NYC Public Schools

On Monday, November 2, NYC Collaborates will host the first panel ever to bring city policymakers together with district and charter educators to discuss ways to address NYC’s segregated school system. The panel discussion, “Diverse Schools: Opportunities and Challenges in Integrating NYC’s Public Schools,” will be held at Brooklyn Law School, 250 Joralemon Street, Brooklyn, NY, from 6-7:30 p.m. Panelists will share their perspectives on, and experiences with, developing schools with diverse student bodies.
Led by Arva Rice, president of New York Urban League, the panel includes New York City Council Members Brad Lander and Ritchie Torres; Clarence Ellis, Community Superintendent, District 17; Kevin Ryan- Young, PTA President, PS 133; Jon Rosenberg, CEO, Hebrew Charter School Center; Todd Sutler, Co-Founder, Compass Charter School.
The seeds of persistent school segregation in New York were sewn decades ago. Low-income children, especially in communities of color – bear the brunt. The problem has been identified recently with growing focus and concern – but it’s not until now that diverse stakeholders have united to combine their expertise and experience, and set the city on a path to solving the problem.
