MORE THAN 140 CMO & INDEPENDENT NYC CHARTER SCHOOLS UNITE WITH ONE VOICE TO THANK GOVERNOR CUOMO FOR HIS SUPPORT AND ADVOCACY ON BEHALF OF PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL STUDENTS
(New York, NY) – 143 CMO & independent charter schools throughout New York City have united on behalf of their tens of thousands of students to thank Governor Cuomo for his support, the New York City Charter School Center announced today. The letter highlights the Governor’s proposed executive budget and its proposal to life the cap on new charter schools. Schools that signed include the Achievement First schools, Bronx Charter School for Excellence, Uncommon Schools, MESA Charter School, Citizens of the World Charter Schools, and the Icahn Charter Schools. Per his proposal, 100 charter schools would be added to the state limit, bringing the total to 560. It would also remove the regional restrictions – meaning that charter schools can grow where demand is at the very highest, including New York City’s lower-income communities.
"Once again, Governor Cuomo has thought big and bold, and made sure that New York City students and their parents come first," said James Merriman, CEO of the New York City Charter School Center. "By raising the cap and removing arbitrary restrictions, the Governor shows that he’s not satisfied to tinker around the edges, but is committed to making sure that quality charters can have meaningful, sustained growth especially in lower-income communities, where demand is highest."
