2019-20

Public charter schools are accountable for the academic achievement of their students. Charter school students must master the same New York state standards and take the same state assessments as other public school students. Charter schools that do not demonstrate academic success can be closed.

  • Overall, charter schools in NYC significantly exceed district proficiency rates in math (59.5% proficient to 42.6% for district students) and in ELA (57.3% proficient to 46.7% for district students).
  • In Central Brooklyn, Harlem and the South Bronx, charter schools outperform district schools bysignificant margins in both math and ELA.
  • Latino and Black NYC charter students outperformed white students statewide in both ELA and math.
