Eliminate the Cap

The Charter Center is leading efforts to once and for all eliminate the arbitrary cap on the number of charter schools that can open in New York. We are working toward the day when every child in New York can attend the public school of their choice.

Equal COVID Testing for Charter School

The New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) is requiring weekly COVID-19 testing, for a portion of their student and staff present in all reopened school buildings in order to curb the spread of the virus in the City’s public schools.

Safety for all Students

In 2016, Local Law 02-2016 was enacted, creating a reimbursement fund for non-public schools with over 300 students, allowing them to use taxpayer dollars to cover the cost of keeping their school facilities safe through contracts with private security firms. Charter schools in private space were not included.

Charters Open Doors

In October 2014, the Charter Center launched a multilingual, multimedia campaign to alert non-English speaking families about the charter school option. The campaign aims to support charter schools’ efforts to recruit English Language Learners (ELLs), in keeping with state law that requires charters to serve comparable numbers of ELLs and students with special learning needs.

Educating Through a Pandemic

Charter schools are reimagining public education, and continue to deliver consistency and quality in the midst of a pandemic by distributing technology, increasing social emotional supports, outfitting socially distant classrooms, and prioritizing live instruction.
